When tragedy strikes, items that you typically take for granted become essential. If you plan on surviving, you have to know what items are necessities and what you can look past. The items you hoard can mean the difference between surviving another day and having to plunder and steal to live. If you’ve never given this any thought, you need to seriously start considering it. In order to give you a little help, we’ve compiled a list of items you should hoard in an emergency. When a natural disaster occurs, you will be at an advantage if you stockpile the items mentioned below.
1: Baby Wipes
You might hear a lot of people tell you that toilet paper is one of the first things you should start stockpiling. However, what these people don’t consider is the space that’s taken up by toilet paper. Remember, you will be stockpiling several items so saving space is very important. Baby wipes take up a lot less space than toilet paper and essentially do the same thing. Baby wipes also have other advantages such as being able to clean other parts of your body. In addition to baby wipes, you’ll want to make sure that you keep other hygiene products as well such as diapers (if you have babies) and feminine hygiene products. Feel free to have some toilet paper as well, but don’t rely on it.
2: Trash Bags
When you think of moving from one location to another, you probably think that boxes are a necessity. However, just like toilet paper, boxes take up a lot of space and are bulky. It’s much more sensible to use trash bags instead. You can easily pack them with clothes and other necessities quickly and move if you need to. In addition to just regular trash bags, you can stock up on plastic bags that you get from grocery stores or from retail stores. This will give you a variety of different sized bags which will come in handy for disposing of trash and helping to prevent contracting diseases. Trash bags take up very little space as you can purchase boxes of them with hundreds of bags in one small convenient sized roll.
3: Cotton Balls
You more than likely already keep cotton balls around the house regularly. This is a great practice to have and you will definitely want a lot of these around in a crisis situation. The most obvious use for these is for first aid. Whether you’re applying ointment need to make a swab, cotton balls are great for medical purposes. Also, you can use cotton rounds and Vaseline as a fire starter as well. When the electricity is out and you have no resources, you will truly appreciate fire. Cotton balls have an added advantage in that they are extremely light and take up next to no space at all.
4: Can Opener
When an emergency breaks and you’re in a position where you need to survive, you’re going to learn to live on canned foods. Cooking a nice full course meal with no electricity is pretty hard. So canned foods such as vegetables, Spam, or even soup will become your favorite food and you’re going to want to be able to open them easily. While many of us have grown accustomed to the mechanical can openers, they won’t do you any good if the power is out. So you’ll want an old fashioned manual can opener so that you can open canned goods up easily.
5: Bathroom Towels
Another item that we probably take for granted until we really need one is a towel. Towels have several uses. You can dry yourself off, help clean yourself off, and they can also help keep some of your extremities warm in case of an emergency. You want to stockpile several different sized towels. Don’t just get the large bath or beach towels. Get some hand towels as well. Regular cotton towels will be sufficient enough. You don’t need to go out and buy the fanciest towels you can find but they should be fairly decent quality if possible. Cheaper towels tend to flake and not last very long.
